How Long Should International Patients Stay in Türkiye After DBS?

In brief
There is no single appropriate stay for every DBS patient. The plan depends on whether surgery is completed in one or two stages, wound healing, neurological recovery, device activation and the timing of the first postoperative review.
International patients should not arrange an inflexible return flight before the surgical plan is confirmed.
Hospital stay
Many patients remain in hospital for approximately one to three days after brain-lead placement, although individual protocols differ.
A longer stay may be needed when:
Surgery is staged
Medical monitoring is required
Mobility or balance is limited
Wound concerns arise
The patient has significant additional medical conditions
Why stay locally after discharge?
Remaining near the surgical centre allows:
Wound review
Assessment of headache, confusion or weakness
Medication adjustment
Removal of sutures or staples when required
Review of postoperative imaging
Management of unexpected problems
The pulse generator may be implanted during the same admission or as a separate procedure.
Is DBS programmed before departure?
Initial programming often begins after a recovery period rather than immediately after electrode implantation.
Some patients may have initial programming before travelling home; others return later or continue programming with a qualified centre in their own country.
What determines return-travel timing?
Clinical stability
Wound healing
Absence of infection
Ability to walk and manage medication
Length and complexity of the journey
Risk of blood clots
Availability of a companion
Surgeon and airline guidance
My approach
Before surgery, I discuss a minimum expected schedule and a contingency period. The return date should remain flexible enough to accommodate medical reassessment.
Conclusion
International DBS patients need time not only for the operation but also for safe postoperative observation and a clear follow-up plan. Travel timing should be approved individually by the treating team.
